Suite for Cello No. 4 BWV 1010
The 6 suites for solo cello by Johann Sebastian Bach, written in Cöthen around 1720, hold a privileged place among the finest musical works ever written.
Perhaps one of Bach’s greatest genius in composing these pieces was his ability to convey a complete musical discourse despite the limitations posed by the cello’s four strings and the use of the bow.
Taking advantage of the fact that plucked string instruments can sustain sounds independently of others, unlike bowed instruments, the intention in this transcription has been to make the minimal possible changes to this music, which is already so complete and perfect.
We publish two versions of this transcription together, one clean and one for study, with exhaustive indications of articulation, fingering, ornamentation, and phrasing.
