PERFORMER

Deion Cho was born in South Korea. From his early childhood Deion was deeply responsive to the sound of the guitar, an instrument which was part of pop culture of parents generations in Korea. At the age of fourteen, after happened to hear Segovia’s album, he found his first guitar from top of the his parents closet. It was the moment when he, who only knew simple chords and strokes, entered the new world of fine guitar compositions.

Only a year after, in 2008, Deion was invited to offer his debut at the ‘Vladivostok Guitar Festival’ in Russia. Concert tour in five different cities of Korea followed and later Deion moved to Spain where, in 2011, officially he started studying guitar and theory in Royal Conservatory of Madrid.

In the early 2010’s while his european reputation was established by a resoundingly successful concerts in Spain, Italy, Germany, Netherlands and prizes of international guitar competitions like ‘Gredos San Diego Guitar Competition’, ‘Ciudat d’Elx Guitar Competition’, ‘Norba Caesarina Guitar Competition’, ‘Sevilla Guitar Competition’, Fernando Sor Guitar Competition’, ‘Andres Segovia Guitar Competition’. In 2018, he continued his studies in Germany, but he returned to Korea for military service.

After 2 years of honorable discharge, in 2023, he got first prizes ‘Adelaide Guitar Competition’ in Australia, ‘Eliot Fisk Guitar Competition’ in Granada and, above all, ‘Francisco Tarrega Guitar Competition’ in Benicassim, one of the most important international guitar competitions.

From this period of his life onwards Deion not only performed the guitar repertoire by great
composers of the past, but also persuaded and worked together his contemporaries such as Leo
Brouwer (Sonata No.8 Homo Ludens, 2021) and Jesus Torres (Himno a la tristeza, 2021) to write new pieces for the instrument.

After 8 years of ’Latin American Guitar Music’ album recording, the new album ‘Heitor Villa-Lobos: Préludes et Études’ was created with the intention of further solidifying its appearance as a solo instrument to the public, despite the vague prejudice that it is an accompaniment instrument or an instrument for playing short pieces.

He is sponsored by ‘Knobloch Strings’.
