DAVID DEL PUERTO (Madrid, 1964)

Composer and guitarist, he studied in Madrid with Francisco Guerrero and Luis de Pablo.
His output includes more than 200 works in all genres, among them 5 operas, 6 symphonies, 1 zarzuela, 1 ballet, numerous concertos with soloist, and an important catalogue of works for guitar.
His music is represented on more than 40 commercial recordings, 12 of them monographic.

In 1993 he won the Gaudeamus Prize in Amsterdam with his first Concerto for Oboe, as well as the “El Ojo Crítico” Award from Spanish National Radio.
In 2005 he was awarded Spain’s National Music Prize.
In 2020 he won the Orpheus Music Award together with guitarist Jeremy Bass for the album “David del Puerto: Guitar Sonatas performed by Jeremy Bass.”
In 2025, the Reina Sofía School of Music awarded him its Medal of Honor, the institution’s highest distinction.

For more than 20 years he has been a regular guest professor at conservatories and universities in Europe, the United States, and Latin America (Madrid, Valencia, Cádiz, Brussels, Milan, Amsterdam, Bremen, Hamburg, Havana, Santiago de Chile, New York, Madison–Wisconsin…).

He is Professor of Harmony at the Reina Sofía School of Music and Professor of Composition at the Katarina Gurska Higher Center. Since 2021, he has also been a composition professor at the Música en Compostela International Courses.

He was guitarist and composer of the group rejoice!, with which he premiered the stage works Sobre la noche, Carmen replay (a ballet commissioned by the Teatro Real in Madrid), and Caro Domenico, commissioned by the Istituto Italiano di Cultura.

Numerous articles and academic studies have been written about his work, including three doctoral dissertations (Jeremy Bass, University of Kentucky, Lexington; Ángel Luis Castaño, University of Extremadura; Eduardo Soutullo, University of Vigo).
